Delta 2 - Kepler - March 6, 2009

Posted by Per (Central Florida, United States) on 7 March 2009 in Transportation.

Launched from SLC-17B, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida

The United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket launched NASA's Kepler spacecraft to discover and characterize hundreds of planets. The rocket flew in the 7925 vehicle configuration.

Taken in my backyard roughly 25 miles south of the launch site.

I live on the Space Coast of Florida and enjoy making photographs of things that, for whatever reason, interest me. You'll notice that a lot of my photography is "space" related (goes with the day job), but I photograph just about anything.

@Shelby: bwahaha - thank you. It looked (and sounded) really freakin cool in person too.

The photo is a long exposure shot of a rocket launching from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Tracy from Victoria, Canada

This is fantastic!! If you don't mind me asking... what time was it taken at?

7 Mar 2009 7:39pm

@Tracy: Thank you!

The launch was at 10:49 PM Eastern time and this was a 92 second exposure. The multiple boosters really light up the sky!

@DarkElf: This is a fun month for us on the Space Coast in Florida, we've 2 launches this week (Space Shuttle and an Atlas V rocket) and then another Delta II before the end of the month... and all of them are night launches! I'll have to get out the fisheye lens for the next Delta II launch I think :-) Thank you for the wonderful comment
